History and inspiration

Coins, cups, swords and batons shape the language of Latin-suited playing cards. The British Museum preserves, among other examples, a nineteenth-century impression of Spanish clubs and swords. Baraja Española de Esperanza brings together this edition’s forty images to explore the nuances of each suit.
